Freeport Pride Announces New Publication

Freeport Pride is proud to annonuce the publication of a new resource, "If Your Only Tool Is A Hammer, All Problems Look Like Nails", a manual for youth workers, educators, church leaders, and others concerned about violence among young people.

The quote from this cover is most often credited to Abraham Maslow, a psychology professor.  It applies to many situations but done more so than conflict among youth, which is the focus of this manual.  It is our hope, in this manual, to help develop more and better tools.  The manual is developed to be used as a resource for individuals and groups in their efforts to teach nonviolence.

Our focus is nonviolence as it relates to everyday life, particularly youth and gang violence.  It is not our aim to merely foster discussion of nonviolence.  Rather, our approach is to teach and promote nonviolence.  Our ultimate goal is to help people learn, live and teach nonviolence.  Most of this manual’s activities are designed for young people but there are no limitations on the use of the material.

The manual is a work in process.  It is our plan for the manual to grow as we develop a larger “tool chest”.  We welcome your comments and your suggestions for additions.

For a free downloadable copy of the manual click here.  The download version does not include the CD’s (Intro to the O.P. World and Excerpt from "The Drum Major Instinct", a sermon by Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.), the DVD (St. Jude’s PSA video), and the brochure, "Gangs and Young People, A Guide for Parents" that are part of the manual hard copy.  A hard copy of the manual will be available in the near future for $50. plus shipping and handling.
